One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

After a day of white water rafting in the mountains through the Ganges, we landed the boats in the holiest place in India, Varanasi. My little laughing/squirming/jumping cousin and I performed our ceremonial bathing in the river. Then my friends and familys all bought camphor, flower garlands, and leaf boats. My older cousin drew me to the edge of the water closest to a small temple sitting within the fast flowing water. I was surrounded by the buzz of thousands of people by praying, getting blessed by priests, and buying religious keepsakes of their pilgrimage. As the sun set and the moon rose, a priest gave a signal and everyone lit the camphor and set their flower laden boats down the river. Wave after wave of people took to the river placing thousands of boats into the river. The sight was surreal, the river was alight with fast burning blurs, a never ending stream of fire heading quickly through the night. The sweet, heady aroma of smoldering flowers drifted along with the boats.
