It's a good alternative to staying in hostels and also a great way to see the "real" country and not just city centres.

Although it's a tourist track to the top; I really enjoyed hiking Ben Nevis last year. The view from the top was amazing and well worth the effort. Pushing myself through the steep sections and dangerous icy bits just added to the experience.
