About Me

Not in Beijing since COVID. Back travelling again

Most of the below is inaccurate and outdated, I keep it as its fun/archive, and Ill need it for when I host again post covid. -I like to share space with people and am quite sociable and like to hear people's stories. I offer accommodation to nice travellers like you when I can. I don't tend to hang out with the surfers that much because I have a 10am-9pm schedule 7days a week and also occasional evening events, but I often can have supper/drinks. If you would like to have a nice place to stay then come along, but i cannot do any tour guiding etc. If you are happy with that, then please stay. There are other surfers usually, so even when im not there it is sociable. -

GENERAL: I spend half the year in Beijing and half in thr UK.

CURRENT MISSION I am always very happy to host lovely/fun/interesting people, please message me. If I am not hosting it means I am on the road at the moment. 有朋自远方来不亦乐乎 . I intend to oneday open a hostel on a Dutch barge in the UK and now running a teach/travel/backpacker businesses, www.go-to.co

ABOUT ME I like travelling, seeing and experiencing new things, I'm interested in the many different cultures, histories, books and people that there are. I am a big fan of things like beer, wine, and nice food.

PHILOSOPHY I like to keep a balanced view when possible. I quite like Zhuangzi philosophy, perspectism, relativism, skepticism etc. I am raised in Western European values, but open to all. I am quietly spiritual and open to all things. Most things are fun

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In London, I shared my big boat. When in Beijing I have 3 or 4 couches and floor space...half the year I live in the most beautiful bit of central Beijing. Opposite Confucius temple and Lama temple. We can host up to 10 people at once and jointly hosted around 200 people so far.

Now I am in Oxford without space to host temporarily.

I try to keep an open house, and go to cs gatherings sometimes.

lots and lots and lots, never had a bad experience. Every one was interesting somehow.

Reading: I read all sorts of things. Now I am doing post-grad part time in Chinese literature. Random booked i enjoyed include: things by f.scott.Fitzgerald and Laurie Lee's stuff about his lone travels around Spain.

i like experiencing diverse things, i have no over-riding hobby so this quote makes me feel happy haha,"the exhaustion of the passion is the beginning of wisdom" I hope thats true cos I dont devote myself to any hobbies!

i like buen rollo

Music, Movies, and Books

FILMS (i liked sometime this last 10years..): L'Auberge Espagnol was formative in the Erasmus days...Jamon Jamon has an excellent ending....anything by Almodovar is fun. Jia Zhangke and Zhang Yimou (red sorghum is great!)....The boat that rocked/aka Good Morning England has a nice soundtrack...anything really....to be honest I like all films except two categories:
Chinese Wuxia ( martial art films where they can fly and too much special fx) and most of what comes out of Hollywood now (particularly films about yuppies trying to balance love and careers which is about 90% of what is produced)...very anti Marvel style films but no worries.

BOOKS&AUTHORS: I read the complete works of Graham Greene (nearly), he is great. f.scott.fitzgerald writes beautifully, indulgent books. I like books that make sense based on where im living or what im going through so in the past I enjoyed orientalist world of suzy wong, Oxford obsessed brideshead revisited and shangrilan lost horizon ...then I suppose in no particular order to specify some titles/authors: Tender is the Night...The Sun Also Rises...harry potter. Authors: Evelyn Waugh,Zhang Ailing, Mu Shiying, Shen Congwen, Ling shuhua, Mark Kitto's bios.

MUSIC: ...anything, mainly Radiohead...ZHOU XUAN. Bebe. Country Music that tells a story. Global music that I can learn language through. Most music is beautiful

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Living on a catamaran boat in central London, running a hostel like airbnb in Hong Kong Lamma Island. Travelling to everyone province in China. Cumulative experiences of living in Beijing,Madrid,Yangshuo, Oxford is good...Being in Cuba was great. North Korea was interesting but hard to recommend. Hosting 200 surfers with my housemates was an exploratory joy.
