About Me

What can I say about me? I've always been a fan of the arts, and of ideas. I annually log onto various test websites and check my political compass scores and IQ scores (whole battery of tests, not just one or two flakies) to make sure that I am still me. I read often, take in as many films as I can, and I like research, it's big nerdy fun. I am listening to Brandenburg Concertos as I write this, though not a rendition that is agreeable (RCA-Victor).

I have traveled, lived, and observed all of Appalachia and the Eastern Forest - from Maine to Georgia and from the Atlantic to the Mississippi, well, more or less.

I've worked 13yrs in entertainment lighting, and 10yrs in transportation. Currently I'm looking for something pastry of pizzeria chefdom, to bide my time and build my greenhouse, where I will retire.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I have recently relocated to NOLA with the intention of staying permanently. Unfortunately I have run out of money before I have been able to find work. I tried the missions but they treated me like a common criminal; no, really, they're far from helpful in this day and age - it's a just a game for a federal dollar for those people and they screw over the poorest among us to get it. I thought I would try the kindness of strangers on this site and see what happens.

I... think one can glean that from all the other crap I'm writing here.

Music, Movies, and Books

I can't name a favorite film, that would be unfair to the other ten thousand films I've seen. So, yes, I'm a big movie and film buff.

I love baroque music first, I guess then early, medieval & renaissance. Of course I like rock, folk, blues, jazz but not brass jazz. I think the only things that make me grit my teeth are country, opera and hate-hop.

Books... I used to own a substantial library; philosophy mostly, sociology, anthropology, natural history, mythology. I don't really read fiction unless it passes into the realm of myth.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once met a woman as dumb as a lug-nut, someone at the workplace. She was a single mother of three with one in the oven. Her oldest, too, was dumb as a lug-nut, and her youngest was too young to tell, although he seemed to have behavioral issues and violent tendencies. They all lived in a tiny efficiency in a slum; alcoholic across the hall, crack whore upstairs. Which brings me to the middle child; a girl of 12 who, of them all, was the most intelligent and responsible one - more so than many adults I've met. I couldn't have it. I put them in a house in a nice neighborhood with money I couldn't really afford to spend. That girl has recently graduated law school. It's not amazing, it's wonderful. It's also rather rather ironic because she doesn't even like me as a person.

Um?

What I Can Share with Hosts

Well, I'm a master gardener, solid painter, great computer graphics guy, and pretty good cook depending on whats being cooked. In the absence of income, I have no beef whatsoever earning my keep for the time I am with you. And perhaps I will recommend some brilliant films you've never seen?
