I was born in Germany, but grew up in Spain. My parents (who met each other in India) introduced me to traveling. I've loved it ever since. In November 2017 I went on an 18 month trip around Asia with my partner Fabiola, who's from Bolivia. I'm a quiet person and generally not much of a talker. I used to be very shy, but I'm much less so now. I'm definitely an introvert, but I do enjoy being with people. It's just that after too much social interaction I need to lie down to recover ;-) I am vegetarian. I don't smoke and I don't like to get drunk. But I don't mind the occasional beer or glass of wine. My favorite modes of transportation is walking and trains for longer distances. One item that I always travel with is an umbrella! It protects me from the sun and rain and I can use it to fight off dogs, monkeys, and snakes. I used to do research, write scientific papers, and teach classes at the University. For fun I read, hike, watch Netflix, study languages, snorkel, study math, travel, take photos, try new foods, ... Things I care about? My family, Fabiola, the environment, being a good person, and making this world a better place.

Once when traveling, I was invited by a local to their home. It was a wonderful experience and I hope couchsurfing can facilitate more such experiences.

兴趣

I'm a nerd and geek, but not a stereotypical one. I love the outdoors and exercise. I care about the environment and wish I could live a zero waste lifestyle (but it's hard, especially when traveling). I believe in effective altruism and have donated roughly 10% of all my income over the years. I try to never let a day go by without learning at least one new thing.

I used to listen to a lot of house music and other electronic dance music. Now I don't listen to music that often anymore. In any case, my music tastes have broadened.

I enjoy listening to audiobooks and podcasts, especially those from which I can learn something.

Some of my favorite non-fiction books include
- A Guide to the Good Life: the ancient art of stoic joy by William Irvine;
- Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond; and
- The Better Angels of our Nature by Steven Pinker.

As to fiction, some of the books I loved include
- The Martian by Andy Weir;
- War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk;
- Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

Some of my favorite podcasts include
- The Skeptics Guide to the Universe,
- Radiolab,
- Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, and
- Rationally Speaking.

I like TV shows. Some I've watched and liked recently are

I also really like The Simpsons and Monty Python.
