Overview
About Me
I'm an Irish citizen who just moved to London after 9 years in California.
My interests are fairly broad and include science of all kinds, history, anthropology, linguistics, psychology, art, architecture, world cultures, travel, politics and political theory, news, macroeconomics, philosophy, games, television, environmentalism, sustainability and energy, and much more (I've recently gotten interested in Kayaking). I know a tiny amount about a lot; I only claim to know a lot about chemistry.
My personality is fairly outgoing. I enjoy serious conversations about important topics and I tend away from talking about other people. My humour is dry and often self-deprecating.
I'm on couchsurfing as a host because being a guest on my 25,000 mile road trip changed my life - or rather the people I met did - and now I want to support the community by giving back now that I am able.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
The difference between being a tourist and a traveller is that a tourist wants to see the sights while a traveller wants to know the area, and the latter requires one to know the people who live there. I am here because I want to be part of a community of people who provide companionship, friendship and support to each other.
Meeting new people is a priority in life. I am not a particularly experienced surfer, but I have stayed with more hosts than I have references for because I spent a summer travelling with a regular surfer who arranged all the surfing (and got all the references!). It changed my life.

Music, Movies, and Books
I like music that is epic or dark...happy or upbeat music does not do it for me, so a lot of metal and hard rock is up my alley, though I also listen to industrial music and classical, as well as a smattering of other genres (anything from the 80's has a high chance of being in my good books).
While my favourite movies and TV of the day changes from year to year, some eternal favourites that have influenced my life include Star Trek, South Park, The Simpsons, Blackadder, Monty Python, Father Ted, Game of Thrones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Cosmos.
Books that have been important to me include 23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism by Ha Joon Chang; Deterring Democracy by Noam Chomsky; The Disaster Artist; The Northern Lights (and sequels) by Phillip Pullman; the Harry Potter series; The Malazan Series by Stephen Erickson; Adults In The Room by Yannis Varoufakis.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Gone on a 25,000 mile road trip across north America, from San Francisco to Tuktoyatuk (north coast of Canada) to New York. And the round trip across the US two additional times on the same trip.
Teach, Learn, Share
I would love to, but isn't that better done in person?
You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
