About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To leave my job and move!

ABOUT ME

Hello there,

I'm David, 31, from Birmingham UK, and I want to see the world - including your couch / bit of floor.

PHILOSOPHY

Do your best and leave the rest.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Couchsurfing has always seemed like an amazing idea to me but I have not yet fully engaged with it. I registered while I lived in France but had no surfers come to stay.

I am keen to travel in a way that is different from the 'average tourist'. I want to try and experience a place , as much as possible, from the perspective of someone who lives there. I want to avoid the tourist traps and see what people who are from a place really cherish or enjoy - or even see those things that are completely mundane to the people who live there but might blow my mind!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Spent four days with Guillaume and Martin in Montreal. A very positive experience. I think I might be getting the CouchSurfing bug...

Interests

I like music ('indy'), swimming, the clarinet, a bit of cycling here and there, and cities...

.. In fact, I am pretty much obsessed with cities. I am going to dedicate my career to Urban Planning - and I'm always fascinated by their complexity and diversity. I also love seeing how they function, or not, as the case may be.

I like food, all types of food especially pain aux raisins and sushi.

I also really like films, especially 'foreign' cinema (french, japanese and korean in particular) and i love Little Miss Sunshine.

I have also been known to enjoy a good old-fashioned BOOGEY!

Music, Movies, and Books

see above
also books that open my eyes to other worlds and cultures
Small Island, Brick Lane, Wild Swans, Memories of a Geisha, a boy called H, La tailleuse chinoise, Modernité, ma Mere! - and crazy quirky french childrens books like Le petit prince and Catherine Certitude.

My music choice is pretty eclectic though have the tendency to forget names of bands and lyrics - check out http://www.last.fm/user/yelnik/ for what i've been listening to recently - currently lots of The XX, Sigur Ros and Mumford and Sons.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I stayed in a Japanese temple on the side of a mountain for one night - relying on the priest to come and collect me from the station and take me to where he lived. It was a bizarre but amazing experience.
