About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Bring the beautiful diversity within the world a little closer and enrich my own experience through sharing.

PHILOSOPHY

Open is better than closed. Open mind, open dialogue, open ideas, inclusive , allowing possibility and complexity. Very little is black and white - we live within the beautiful shades of grey.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

just getting my feet wet. Don't have too much time for the local events, although they sound great! Hoping to host folks here, and maybe hook up some in Europe with my adult kids.

Interests

Rock and roll! My boyfriend is a musician and we have lots of friends who are too... We see lots of shows big and small. I'm currently working on a book about aging in rock and roll. I'm also a big reader, love to talk about books, film, art...

Music, Movies, and Books

MUSIC: I must say, I'm a big Kenny Howes fan. In a related story, I am also coming to be more fond of the Beatles. Power Pop in general (20/20, Plimsouls), dance music of all sorts (Faithless, Grace Jones), worldbeat stuff (Amr Diab, Natacha Atlas), Alt Country (Drive-By Truckers, Lyle Lovett), and general weirdness that no one seems to appreciate - stuff like Kate Bush and Nina Hagen, and ya know... on and on...

MOVIES: Anything by the Polish Brothers or the Cohen Brothers, or Wes Anderson or PT Anderson. and Baz Luhrman. I love documentaries - most important one at the moment is "For the Bible Tells Me So", a look at the Christian Church's treatment of homosexuality. VERY WELL DONE!!! Also, my friends Scott and Anjelica's project: "Masizakhe: Let Us Build Together" was filmed in South Africa in 2005/6 and highlights the mood of South Africans ten years after the end of apartheid. The film weaves powerful spoken word and music between the themes of poverty, segregation, racism, and the struggle to rebuild a nation that has been scarred by the effects of a system that regulated people to the worst possible conditions.

BOOKS: My own - in the works, "What a Drag it is Getting Old: Life Lessons from the Leatherclad" or somesuch. Rock and Roll taught us how to be young - what can it teach us about growing older? Featuring interviews with rock legends speaking about their own aging process and the greying of the industry that was once the exclusive playground of youth. I love to read Irvin Yalom, Christopher Moore, Thomas Moore, Jean Shinoda Bolen, Jose Saramago, Ann Tyler, Chuck Klausterman, Tom Robbins, James Hillman, poetry, and pretty much anything I can get fit in my laptop bag while traveling.
