For me poor student it's more than just not sleep under a bridge but to have also the chance to share, met new people and not just doing basics tourist stuff.
I like feel the real atmosphere of a city and thanks to couchsurfing its way more easy and cool.
I think that the community of couchsurfing share the same values and respect concerning what travelling is.
