About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To be faithful in the opportunities I have in art, technology and entrepreneurship.

ABOUT ME

My wife and I have been married for 11 years! I am an artist (algorithmic art - check out http://nathanselikoff.com to see what I'm talking about), a programmer and an entrepreneur. My wife, Amy, is a fantastic teacher (7th grade civics), a former derby girl, a cancer survivor, and gave a TEDx talk about teaching in 2012. We are both musical (guitars and vocals primarily) and enjoy good food and beverages, conversation, community, hospitality, truth, and justice. We are also both map nerds - check out http://localnotebooks.com to see one of my map-related projects.

PHILOSOPHY

Speak truth with love

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We have surfed in the US and abroad, had wonderful experiences, and always look forward to hosting CS'ers in Orlando when we're not too busy.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

We had fantastic times couch surfing in Portugal, Spain, Cologne, Vienna, Amsterdam, and Leeuwarden, in addition to spots along our summer 2009 cross-country bike trip. Unofficially, we have hosted many family members, friends, and friends of friends at our house (as many people have).
We loved just getting to meet our hosts and many of them have generously taken us around the city (Thanks, Dominic).
On a hillside outside of Granada, overlooking olive groves and grape vines, we had a magical experience deep into the night with our host, an American expat, dreaming about a better world and recounting many adventures both new and past.
In Leewarden, we stayed with the former mayor and ambassador and learned all about the many trips and wines they had sampled.
We recommend CS to everyone we know. We've never had a bad experience, even staying with the college boys with the stripper pole in their living room.

Interests

Art, music, books, movies, history, computers, biking, social justice, racial reconciliation, home improvement, card games, real good food, sustainability, gardening, science.
Conversation, real, meaningful, conversation over a nice bottle of wine or dark beer from a dive bar.
Having people over to our house for jam sessions, good food, and plenty to drink.

Music, Movies, and Books

Amy currently is reading anything related to the American Civil War and how it affects us today. She's about 20 books in and highly recommends: David Kennedy's Don't Shoot; Tony Horwitz's Confederates in the Attic and Midnight Rising: John Brown; Frederick Douglass' Life Narrative; the Strange Career of Jim Crow by C. Woodward. Right now she's reading the Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois and his account of John Brown.

As a civics teacher, she tries to understand parts of our history that profoundly impact us today to be able to share that with her students.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Right now we are on an around the world adventure: we started in Orlando (our home) then Chicago, San Fran, South Korea, Nepal, London, Norway, Finland, we'll finish off in Iceland and then head home. Nearly 50000 km of travel over the course of 2 months. You can read more at: www.NathanAndAmy.com
We took one summer and rode our bicycles 1000 miles (1600 km) across the United States. We gave a PechaKucha (20 power point slides, 20 second timer per slide=exactly 6:40 talk) presentation recounting some incredible and mundane adventures of the trip which you can see on our blog at http://nathanandamy.com/2013/12/23/through-heat-and-storm-our-1000-mile-bicycle-tour-2/.

Teach, Learn, Share

We both play guitar and would be glad to teach the basics. We bring our ukelele all over the world and love writing new songs and having fun. I can answer most of your computer or technology related questions. I'm also a good cook :)

What I Can Share with Hosts

A love for good conversation; we love cooking; most likely we will have musical instruments and would love to sing and jam.

Countries I’ve Visited
