About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Exploring the American culture as well as studying in the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Updating: doing a Summer internship in Boston, MA.

ABOUT ME

Hey y'all, my name is Diogo and I am a Brazilian medical student living in the USA for a year. It's complicated to talk about myself but I think I am an easygoing person, honest, simple, funny, friendly and tolerant.

I came to the USA to study topics related with my major during exactly one year and to gain some experience to help improving the Brazilian education system. The exchange program that I'm participating is named "Science Without Borders" and I have been sponsored by the Brazilian government. Nowadays I am living in Birmingham, AL, and studying in the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

One of the main goals in my life is become a good doctor and to work in the Brazilian public health system. In Brazil we have public and private hospitals. In the public hospitals, people don't need to pay anything to get a medical consult, however, the system has a lot of problems and we don't have enough physicians to attend the population. That's why I want to work there, I believe that in few years our public health system is going to be an international model.

UPDATE: Moved to Boston for an internship.

UPDATE 2: I'm back in Brazil

PHILOSOPHY

"A man must travel. On his own, not through stories, images, books or TV. Need to travel by himself, with his eyes and feet, to understand what is yours. For one day plant their own trees and value them. Know the cold to know the heat. And the opposite. Feel the distance and homelessness to be well under his own roof. A man must travel to places that do not know to break this arrogance that makes us see the world as we imagine, not simply as it is or can be; which makes us teachers and doctors of what we haven't seen when we should just be students, and simply go and see. Why I'm on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I was recommended for one of my friends. He told me that is perfect to people like me who loves to travel and meet new people. He was right!

I can host people and I would love surfing in some couches sometimes. I'm still learning about the city I'm living now and I don't have a car, so it's kind of complicated to show the CSers around. But I can join you during your visit and I'm here to talk and to hang out! It would be great to meet some CSers living in Birmingham as well.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've hosted and surfed a few times so far. All good experiences.

Interests

I love traveling and I love meeting new people and cultures. I think the world is too big and the life too short so we should try to know as much as we can! When I say "know" I mean all aspects of life that include countries, people and cultures.

I'm in med school in Brazil, and it takes most of my time. Although I don't have much free time in Brazil, in my free time I like to hang out with friends, go to the beach, playing soccer, seeing people, meeting people, staying with my family, drinking cold beer, etc.

Music, Movies & Books

All kinds of music. Seriously! But if I would have to chose one, my favorite band is the "Arctic Monkeys".

My favorite genre of movies is rom-coms, although my favorite TV show is The Walking Dead LOL.

My favorites books are from a Brazilian writer who lived in the XVII century, he's called Machado de Assis. Recently I read the book "Dear John" of Nicholas Spark and I liked it.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I will never forget the moment that I was accept to medical school in Brazil.

I almost died once swimming in the sea. I was about to be hit by a boat when my uncle dived and pushed me down of the boat's helices. That moment I felt like if I was born again. It's not exactly a amazing thing LOL, but it marked my life.

The Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty, Christ the Redeemer (Rio), top of Empire State building were life-changing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you some portuguese/brazilian if you're interested. I can tell you about my homecountry, our culture, lifestyle, politics, etc. Basically all you want to know about Brazil. If you're a health care professional or even if you're not we can talk about medical stuff. We can talk about pretty much everything, share life experiences, etc. It would be enriching anyways.

Countries I've Visited
