About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Finish writing "Sustainable Energy - without the hot air"

ABOUT ME

I'm a grumpy idealist and pacifist, an enthusiastic inventor and fixer of things, and a happy teacher of anyone who wants to figure things out for themselves. I'm writing a book about Sustainable Energy www.withouthotair.com - aimed at helping people add up the numbers and sniff out the poppycock.
I love playing ultimate frisbee. Cambridge ultimate practices are frequent, with a main practice every Sunday at 11am on Jesus Green. I work in the Physics department of Cambridge University. By the way, I don't drink much; if you come and stay with me, please don't give me alcohol.

PHILOSOPHY

All the best things in life are free.

World peace through Ultimate.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I would like to reduce my house's carbon footprint-per-human by sharing it with other humans for a few days at a time.

Interests

Did I mention ultimate frisbee?
Other outdoor pursuits - hill walking, scrambling, cycling. I've got a piano.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like listening to music from Faure to Sting. Favourite movies: Toy Story, Star Wars, Secrets and Lies. I like most quality movies, and some Hollywood movies (eg Eddie Murphy's Nutty Professor, Sneakers, Terminator 2). My favourite books include "The Ancestor's Tale" (about life and evolution) and "Godel, Escher, Bach" (about everything, especially life and machines).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'm proud to have led the Dasher project (www.dasher.org.uk) which provides free software for efficient communication by disabled people and people with RSI.

Teach, Learn, Share

I've written a textbook on Information Theory. I can teach most science subjects.
