About Me

CURRENT MISSION

One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things. – Henry Miller

ABOUT ME

Thanks for looking at our page!

We are a young married couple recently free from the military! We are taking a "gap year" before we move to Columbus, Ohio in August 2012. Navy life gave us a serious travel bug. We lived in Hawaii for 3 years and we miss it terribly! We've taken every opportunity to travel and it has been amazing every time. We love meeting new people, realizing that we may seem different but we're actually the same in a surprising number of ways, learning about other cultures, and experiencing the world. We are fun and easy-going. Love to laugh, have good conversations, and enjoy life!

We'll be spending 2.5 months in India and 5 months in Latin America (learning Spanish!). Our travels start August 1st.

PHILOSOPHY

Honesty and personal responsibility are the cornerstones to a genuinely fulfilling life. Get out there and make it your own.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We are brand new to CS! We started an account some time ago when a friend of ours told us about it, but we ended up not doing anything with it due to unstable housing circumstances at the time (we've been moving a lot lately) :( We are looking to surf right now and will host in the future once our "gap year" is over and we settle down for awhile.

Interests

We enjoy the outdoors, going to concerts and cultural events, going out to restaurants and having home gatherings. We also like music, movies, and finding the best wines/beers we can get our hands on. Great conversations are better than wild parties, but sometimes it's good to mix it up a bit.

Music, Movies, and Books

Rob likes: Basically, the 90's were the peak of rock music in his mind. He's also a big fan of Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Muse, Enigma, old Metallica, Chevelle, Jimmy Eat World, Henryk Gorecki, Erik Satie, and just a whole bunch of random other stuff. Clearly there is no rhyme or reason to his musical taste. He reads philosophical stuff when he has the time (mostly interested in philosophy of science, existentialism, and religion). His favorite movies have been Memento, Aliens, and Office Space. Amy digs contemporary classical music written by living composers, and any rock/pop that exhibits true singing talent and creative song-writing rather than factory-made garbage. She LOVES watching movies, it's basically her second-favorite thing in the world. Her favorites have been Timer, The Abyss, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

We spent Amy's 29th birthday in Berlin with three friends we met at the Circus Hostel. Our group consisted of two Americans, one Canadian, one Australian, and one Sri Lankan. We went out on the town, discovered a local hangout, tried to fit in, and found ourselves at a pizza/kabob/curry take-out place at three in the morning where a whole patio of people sang Amy "Happy Birthday" in German. It was the most amazing birthday, ever!

Teach, Learn, Share

Rob knows a bit about philosophy, chemical and nuclear engineering, and random trivia acquired from a lifetime of new hobbies every year or two. Brewing beer and growing gourmet mushrooms are his latest endeavors. Amy studied vocal performance, so she can diagnose your singing problems.
