Sobre mí

Bookworm. Coffee addict. Citizen of Taiwan.

I am born and raised in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. My country is a young democracy with a colourful history. The past of oppression and struggles, migrations and colonisation are what led us to where we currently are. Our natural environment is also worth mentioning: there are coral reefs along our tropical coastline and alpine tundra upon our 4000-meter-high mountains. This small island is considered one of the most ecologically diverse countries.

I major in sociology (more specifically: historical and political sociology; with specific interests in institutions and education policy).

I had been an exchange student in Berlin (2016/17 Winter-2017 Summer) and had made the most of my stay in Europe by also visiting the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, France and the UK.

I am interested in politics, history and culture. Issues that I am particularly passionate about are democracy and equality. These interests are also manifested in my taste of other things: My favorite TV series is The West Wing, while my favorite Shakespeare play is Julius Caesar, which, I assume, is an uncommon choice.
But, naturally, it doesn't stop me from liking other things. Amongst my favourite movies are the Before trilogy and The Three Colours trilogy. La La Land has also really impressed me. I am also a fan of football, tennis and baseball.

I also enjoy talking about music and literature, especially poetry, with friends. Actually, I generally enjoy having contact with people. I like to talk, but not as much as I like to listen and, if allowed, ask questions.

I hope to be dependent on no one, but I am also hopelessly dependent upon caffeine. Have fewer than one cup of coffee on any given day, I will be one step away from the walking dead :)

I am a native speaker of both Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese. English is a language that I frequently uses. My German is at B2 level while my Dutch is somewhere near A2.

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

I first encountered this project in a course I took in which we discussed the concept, ideal and prospect of "sharing".
To me, the appeal of couchsurfing is multi-faceted. People benefit from reciprocity rather than pecuniary exchanges, which can lead to relationships that are more sustainable and have the potential of achieving happy surprises, i.e. things impossible to plan in advance. Simply put, beautiful friendships can stem from these encounters.
In particular, I am interested in knowing what those concepts I've read in books and events I've heard from the news actually have to do with real people. What do contentious issues such as immigration, religion, trade or the "European model" mean to "ordinary" people? How are collective triumphes perceived and how are national tragedies coped with? What are the dreams and difficulties for different people? Or, is any thing we've heard about "typical/stereotypical behavior of" people of various countries actually true?
(I'd also like to answer similar questions myself to anyone that is interested in the case of my country. I can also talk about literature, music, politics or anything else.)
On top of that, as a student with limited resources who likes to travel, this project is also appealing economically (reads: it also saves money).
I surely hope I can do more to contribute to this community!
