About Me

Hi!

I'm Dylan,
I'm originally from Melbourne, Australia, I moved to the United States in 2014, and currently living and working in Indianapolis as a multimedia journalist.

I have kinda always been a bit of a travel bug and have lived in Victoria, Tasmania, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Indiana. I 'm pretty easy going, I like to talk, meet new people, cook, and just try completely new adventures.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm actually in the process of moving to Minneapolis in August and the sublease that I looked at taking over last time I was there fell through so I'm looking for somewhere I can stay for a couple of days during a trip in the middle of July while I look for somewhere to lease. In addition to that I'd also like to use this to help find some friends and people to connect and socialize with when I move.

Interests

I'm a pretty outgoing person and will generally try everything at least once. I really enjoy being outdoors: camping, hiking, and playing sports in the summer; ice skating and hockey in the winter. I don't mind hanging out and talking while having a couple drinks, generally beer, bourbon, and wine.
Additionally, I really enjoy learning about other people and listening to their stories and experiences, I have yet to come across someone who didn't have an interesting life, we all do in our own different ways and I find that really cool.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

So in 2014 I came to the US for vacation (I have an American parent so have permanent residency here) the night before I was supposed to fly out of LA I decided to move to the US with, so I called up the airline and changed my ticket to open-ended, packed everything into bags, and started figuring out where I should go.

The next morning I showed up at the Santa Ana greyhound station with three bags, two possible destinations in mind, and $500 in my bank account. The two possibly locations were Phoenix, AZ where a friend I used to work with was living and Eau Claire, Wisconsin where I had a cousin studying at college. I picked Wisconsin and purchased a ticket for what ended up being six separate bus trips and some short hitchhiking connections across the United States.

After being stranded in the snow on two occasions: once overnight in Utah and then again in Colorado, I eventually got to Eau Claire a few days late. It was -10F when I arrived in Eau Claire and I only had clothing for the west caost, my cousin was in an exam by the time I got there, so I found myself a ride to a cafe downtown and sat in there while I figured out what I was going to do with my life. I ended up making friends with two students from UWEC while I was in there and they took me around to look at apartments that day. Together we found a sublease for me to take over, I put most of my remaining cash down for rent and moved in that day.

And that's the story of how I moved to the US.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love sharing stories and helping other people figure out that they do have interesting stories to tell and teaching them how to express them.

I can teach how to do car maintenance like changing oil or brake pads, ice skating, photojournalism, skating, editing.

I am pretty much game to try and learn anything new.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I have plenty of travel stories, I can cook, I generally travel with an ample supply of Australian goodies such as Vegemite and Tim-Tams, can also make a pretty decent Kangaroo steak if requested.
