To meet new people and explore new cultures.

I have travelled a lot by myself and know how expensive and titing this can be at times. Sometimes it's nice to stay in a home instead of a hostel/hotel. I believe that no matter how extrovert you are (which I'm not) you need to relax once in a while without being near other tourists.

Couchsurfing is also a great way of exploring parts of the city that you normally wouldn't see as a tourist.
