It's the best idea.I dont know who first thought about it ,but its genius.
Its not only about travelling in low cost , you get to meet local people from the country you re visiting .You come in close touch with their culture ,their everyday life ,an opprotunity for a big insight .
For sure noone can show you around better or give you hints ,than someone that loves their place .
It's a way of coming in touch with people around the world you ' d probably never meet otherwise and with who you can maybe share a common interest.In best case possible ,you make international friends.
