I've have stayed as an exchange student in Germany for 3 times and hosted back.
In 2015 I spent 6 weeks in a host - family in China which was great.
In 2016 I was an English teacher in Indonesia.

I'm sure that staying at a locals' place is the best way to meet wonderful people, get advice on the city and the country from them and to see unique sides of their culture.
