Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Know strangers.
Challenge comfort.
☝🏻

I deeply value the connections I make with people and cultures while traveling, and this is the best way I've found to do that.

Interests

I love challenging hikes, biking, camping, relaxing on the couch after those things... I love love, yoga/pilates, dancing, music, learning, teaching, sustainability, vegan food, travel, all life on this spectacular, ailing planet.

Music, Movies, and Books

My most recent favorite books:

📖 "Dreams of Maryam Tair: Blue Boots and Orange Blossoms" by Mhani Alaoui (set in and around Casablanca, Morocco, this tale that weaves together the reality and culture of myth and magic blew my mind; I re-read every chapter before proceeding to the next, something I've never done before.)

📖 "The House on Butterfly Street" by Mhani Alaoui (also set in Casablanca, Alaoui again displays her exquisite skill in creating a compassionate cultural critique. Both her books are must-reads for understanding urban Moroccan culture.)

📖 "Mother Mary Comes to Me" by Arundhati Roy. (Set in and around Aymanam, India. This is Roy's excellent memoir describing how she survived her mother's brutal emotional abuse and neglect while becoming an architect, activist, author, wife, and documenting the jungle-guerrilla Naxalites.)

📖 "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy. (Set in and around "Ayemenem", India, this fictional masterpiece closely resembles Roy's family story. The uniqueness of her gifted writing is jaw-dropping. It was also fascinating to read her memoir first, which described her process and life-similarities.)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A peak experience while hiking over a pass in Georgia from Juta to Roshka and back, seeing the breathtaking white, blue and green Abudelauri lakes along the way.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm a chemistry professor with a strong passion for culturally responsive teaching and equitable success in Chem and STEM. Through teaching I also learn about myself, and through cultivating compassion for my students, I become a better person.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Friendliness, humor, being up for anything, being considerate and respecting your home.

Countries I’ve Visited

Albania, Azerbaijan, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Georgia, Greece, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Virgin Islands, British
