About Me

I am Australian but currently studying my masters in New York City. My studies focus on using media as a tool for positive social change. I am obsessed with radio, love taking photos, and want to work in a social enterprise. In June and July I will spend a few months doing an international field program in Rio de Janeiro. The theme of the program is human rights, environmental and education media.

I am really interested in education and for work I visit and write about New York City public high schools for an independent website. Before moving to New York I worked for a social enterprise that runs educational mentoring programs for Indigenous school students in Australia. I left this job to take some time off to travel and go to the FIFA World Cup 2014 before starting my masters degree.

I like meeting new people and always enjoy a good chat - especially over good food and drinks. I'm adventurous and I love the outdoors. I am very independent and have done a lot of solo travel - through Europe and the Americas. I lived in Mexico in 2010, which is where I learnt to speak Spanish. I am looking forward to improving my Portuguese while I'm in Brazil!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I do not like being a tradition tourist and think couchsurfing is the perfect way to get to know a place, meet cool people and share skills and ideas. I had my first couchsurfing experiences in Europe in 2011 and had such a good time. Although I have only had a few official couchsurfing experiences so far they could not have been better. I felt so welcomed, comfortable and relaxed and my hosts have been amazing. I have also done a lot of unofficial couchsurfing through friends of friends. I love contributing something to houses where I am staying... normally by cooking.

Interests

I like cooking (and eating), sports and the outdoors. Sunshine and good coffee make me very happy. My best friend likes to joke that I'm a little like an old person at heart because I love things like gardening, baking, reading the newspaper and drinking tea. But I also like young people things like craft beer and loud music. I am very close to my family and friends and I miss them lots but it's a sacrifice I make so I can learn new things and experience the big bad world.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like to absorb all kinds of culture and that shows in my ridiculously diverse reading and music taste. In terms of music I like everything from hip hop to classical and with books I go through things like trashy period dramas, philosophy and historical fiction then back to trash again. I watch a lot of documentary films but hardly any feature films or TV.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was 18 I went to Brasil and spent 4 days in the Amazon with two of my best girl friends. We slept in hammocks and hiked or kayaked during the day. It was incredible.

Teach, Learn, Share

I really interested in world issues and love speaking and learning from people with different opinions and experiences. I would love to improve my Spanish and Portuguese and learn to cook different dishes from around the world.

What I Can Share with Hosts

In addition to good food and conversation I can help with English (or Spanish if you are a beginner), cooking, podcasting, taking photos... and having fun.
