I am currently a farmer at a small nonprofit dairy in rural New York where I milk cows and goats, feed the chickens and sheep, and share the work and lessons at the farm with visiting schoolchildren. In the fall of 2012, I am starting graduate school in City Planning at University of California at Berkeley.

Last week, a 5-year-old asked why, with only sun, rain, and soil, tiny tomato seeds grow into big green plants with juicy fruit on them. After a moment of speechlessness, I responded, "The same reason why you grow big and tall: it just happens; nobody knows why."
