to find art in everyday life
Newly back in the USA and seeking French expats/French speakers pour prendre un verre et parler de tous ce que vaut le coup!
The Portrait Project tour is now complete. Thank you for your support! Check out the
The Portrait Project Blog for images and memories.
Check out my very unoriginal expat blog that I'm no longer updating, from my 3 years in France:
Better is the enemy of good.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I drew portraits of friends and strangers for the CS-based Portrait Project in 2011-2012.
I used to host a little bit in Marseille, Seattle and Avignon.
I've stayed in a lot of CS places in Europe.
I used to go to CS meetups in France.
Surfed: Bratislava, Ljulbljana, Budapest, Zagreb, Pula, Antwerp, Brussels, Paris, Rennes, Toulouse, Nimes, Marseille, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, New York, Vancouver BC and San Francisco.
Portrait Project'ed: Avignon, Marseille, Barcelona, Nimes, Paris, Rome, Bratislava, Budapest, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Pula, Brussels, Antwerp.
#1: riding on the back of a moped/scooter/motorcycle at night through empty city streets
#2 random acts of song and dance
#3 unplanned swimming
I also enjoy purposefully getting lost in new cities, bookstores, learning new things, climbing trees, finding secret spots in the woods (and secret beaches), morning jogs in ancient cities, writing and receiving postcards, discussing articles from Le Monde Diplomatique, playing chess, and talking to strangers on the street.
Music, Movies, and Books
Movies: I generally like arthouse and documentary films, with the occasional stoner film thrown in. For example, Holy Mountain, Henry and June, Saragossa Manuscript, Dazed and Confused, The Russian Ark, The Big Lebowski, Red/White/Blue trilogy, Pump Up the Volume. I like an artsy vampire movie (Let the right one in, Trouble everyday, etc).
Music: I'm a rock girl first and foremost: 90s, 60s Garage/psych, indie..jazz.. French electro...sad core...obscure classical. Right now I'm really into guitar ragas (think John Fahey, Sir Richard Bishop).
Books: I'm trying to lighten up since lately most of my reading has been on political science, international relations and sociology/anthropology topics. I like Paul Auster, Vladimir Nabokov, and Milan Kundera, to start with...looking to be opened up to new fiction.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I've been wading in the off-limits catacombs under Paris in thigh-high water...
