The experience

Volunteering wasn't just an overnight contingent occurrence. The ardentness in my heart to reach out to the community has always been there. I admire people who get out there and just help, so why not be one of them and do it all while I still can? Don't get me wrong; it is just not through volunteering that you will be able to help. I think it's a lifestyle, and I think it should be.

It was through Laura that I learned about this incredible All Hands Volunteers. After the non-profit organization accepted us, she booked her ticket for the following day, and we shopped for our construction gear. We stayed in Bohol for ten days but, unfortunately, worked only for seven days with hard physical labor. Roosters usually woke us up every morning at 6 am, and as always, I was excited to get my hot cup of coffee and a slice of bread with a local peanut butter spread. Mondays, by the way, are extra special because our lovely project director, Katie, makes pancakes for breakfast.

Having to work with people around the world with huge hearts was ridiculously amazing. Despite all these differences, it was easy to make friends because we all have the same goal: to help. As one of the volunteers said, “We will all be friends for life,” which for me is possibly true. Again, I want to express gratitude on behalf of the locals to all of my fellow volunteers who were working their cocos off and those who are about to start it. Filipinos will forever thank you for touching their lives and our lives. Thank you.

During working hours, lovely residents in Antequera Bohol also helped us out and endlessly fed us with boiled bananas and coconut water. Their overly gratefulness and friendliness always made most of our day. We were all always excited for the next working hours, well, aside from a nice shower and a good meal with other fantastic volunteers, these three playful doggies were always there to greet you, namely Sakura, Yolanda, and Eyebrows, the fireflies who were always showing off their glow with a spectacular background of the night sky and because there was a little light pollution in that area so star-filled heavens always took my breath away.
