I've recently picked up where I left off on a journey that began in May 2013. I left that month for six months hitchhiking around the United States, Canada, and Mexico, followed by a month in Guatemala and five in Mexico before being called back to Vancouver for a further year. I was largely raised in and around Vancouver, a lovely but boring place, and returned for that year to see how I might be of use combatting pipeline projects planned across the north of the province. After that year, I left for a few weeks at the Unist'ot'en resistance camp and then to resume my Spanish studies and ramble in Central America, with the intention to continue further south.
Before this period of my life I worked at Vancouver's gay men's health organization, coordinating their condom distribution and outreach programs, as well as an annual leadership program for young gay men. I began that job while I was still in university, where I majored in Asian Area Studies and Modern European Studies (a mouthful to communicate history and culture; I focused on 19th and early 20th century Japan, China, and Central Europe). For the year that I was back in Vancouver I worked at the gay men's health research organization, coordinating and facilitating their youth engagement group. For all it's faults, I really enjoyed being in school, but promised myself that I wouldn't return until I'm 30.
I always try and do my best with what I'm given. I use 'try' a lot, to acknowledge that I'm not going to be or do anything all of the time; we all falter, and there's much that cannot be foreseen. I try to be understanding and accepting of everyone and every situation, and being a secure person I usually don't have much issue with that. I try to live by my principles, too, and so understanding and acceptance doesn't mean agreement. Those principles tend to be quite radical by most standards, but I'm not playing this game of life to make others agree.
One of the most useful skill I've acquired is to laugh at myself, the errors that I make, the annoyances and indignities that I stand, relatively minor as they often may be. I'm very curious, one of those with an insatiable need to know. I'll always try to find the time to get to the bottom of it.
No matter where I am or what I'm up to, I conceive of life as a journey to better understand my self, others, and the world around us; to improve my critical thinking capacities, and learn how I can apply myself in positive change.
I've always found writing about myself difficult, as how I imagine myself only so often matches how others perceive me (all the more so if one doesn't know me well). What I have learned is that I generally know what I like, what I want, and that I can’t stand to spend time on what I don't. Seems obvious enough, but I've also gradually discovered I have the confidence (and privilege) to live so.
I can't say I've ever significantly found it the case that good comes to those that do good, but I do love putting positivity into the world whenever I can.
Act deliberately and consciously. I try not to use absolutes.
Actuar de manera deliberada y conscientemente. Trato a no usar nunca absolutos.

I've tried hosting as many peeps as I can while in Vancouver, and try to be the surfer that I would love to host when surfing.
He tratado de acoger tantos píos que puedo mientras estoy en Vancouver, y trato de ser el "surfer" que me encantaría acoger.

Music, Movies, and Books
I love films; international, queer, documentary, 'classic', 80's sci-fi. Some favourites include Chungking Express (Wong Kar-wai), Blade Runner (Ridley Scott), City Lights (Charlie Chaplin), Woman in the Dunes (Hiroshi Teshigahara), On the Corner (Nathaniel Geary), M (Fritz Lang), Leave Her to Heaven (John M. Stahl), The Times of Harvey Milk (Robert Epstein), Children of Paradise (Marcel Carné), among many others.
Musicians and groups I enjoy include [Los músicos y los grupos que me gustan son]: MK (Marc Kinchen), Supetramp, Norma Jean Bell, Elvis Costello, Donna Summer, Sylvester, John Lennon/The Beatles, Loleatta Holloway, Moodymann, Eurythmics/Annie Lennox, Sister Sledge, Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes/Armstead, Todd Edwards, Elton John, Army of Lovers, Portishead, Ryuichi Sakamoto/Yellow Magic Orchestra, Frankie Knuckles, Pink Floyd, Sade, Hercules and Love Affair, Kate Bush, The Band, Yoko Ono, Tempest Trio, Wardell Piper, Salsoul Orchestra, Pointer Sisters, Vera Lynn, David Bowie, Evelyn 'Champagne' King, Inner City, Cher, Larry Levan, Le Pamplemousse, Gil Scott-Heron, Prince, Chaka Khan, Kerri Chandler, Gwen Guthrie, among others [entre otros].
As for books, I love reading. I'm something of a bibliophile; perusing a used bookshop, surrounded by such a diversity of titles, overwhelmed with that unique musk, flipping the pages a well worn volume is simply too, too much. What I read varies widely with what I'm interested in and where I'm going. Fiction of many genres; poety; plays; non-fiction, whether current events, history, or philosophy. I'm also a ravenous consumer of web-based content, especially blogs focused around social justice and progressive politics.
Sunsets somehow always seize me. From my back porch to the winding canyons of Shaanxi, evening twilight holds a great power over me, and inspires me like little else.
Puestas de sol de alguna manera siempre me agarran. Desde mi porche trasero en Vancouver, a los cañones serpenteantes de Shaanxi, crepúsculo de la tarde tiene un gran poder sobre mí, y me inspira como poco otro.
Teach, Learn, Share
I carry no applicable certifications, but I tutor English, have guided yoga practices with friends, and mutually have honed cooking skills with people around the world, and would be happy to carry on any of those with anyone.
Sin duda, todavía estoy estudiando español, pero si estás un principante también y quieres practicar, vamonos!
Having had over 600 rides hitchhiking in a couple dozen countries, I have hitchhiking stories over a wide range of people and experiences, and would be happy to share! If you're looking to rack up your own, I can also share all that I've learned about effective hitchhiking over the course of those rides nad journeys.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I love to cook, especially with and for others! I'm also 'one of those' who can actually quite enjoy doing dishes. I'm definitely the type to help out however I might at the moment, whatever projects may be going on at the house, picking something up on the way back to your place, helping to clean. I try to travel as light as I can (though, that of course includes far too many books), so I don't have much physical to share, but I have plenty of smiles and good energy to go around!
