About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I love the natural world and study birds, whales and plants.

ABOUT ME

I am a writer, illustrator, biologist. I love nature, so most of my time is spent in wild places. In the spring and fall my home is on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, where I study bird and plant communities. In the summer, I journey north to Alaska to research humpback whales. With my community of cherished colleagues, we investigate humpback social ogranization and communication. In the winter, I travel to california to write and study with my co-workers, usually in university towns. I am fun loving person, and enjoy socializing. I also value quite time so I can think about how the universe works

PHILOSOPHY

Secular humanist. Love to talk about the origins of life, ethics, emotions and culture.

Music, Movies, and Books

Mostly I read science journals and books.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I love to backpack off trail to study wild places. Have seen glaciers calve, whales breach, nestlings chirp, grizzlies charge, ancient trees fall, seeds grow, and the green flash on far horizon.

Teach, Learn, Share

I like to reflect on animal behavior and emotion (see interests above). I am alarmed about wars in the Middle East, so I like to talk about the politics of that region.
