About Me

I'm a nurse with a history of working in humanitarian aid, now enjoying a quieter life in the Japanese countryside.
Often I am busy with a DIY project, fixing up the old akiya (empty house) we bought. I also run my own home server for fun.
When I'm not tinkering with technology or wood, I'm passionate about diving—I'm an Advanced Open Water diver and after a hiatus have recently been exploring some amazing sites in Okinawa.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

first joined Couchsurfing back in 2006 and have always been drawn to its spirit of trust and cultural exchange. After a break, I recently reconnected with the community and was reminded of how incredible it is to share stories and experiences with people from all over the world.

Interests

I love working with my hands and finding creative solutions to problems. My partner and I bought an akiya (an old, vacant house) in the countryside, and we've been slowly bringing it back to life, fixing and building much of it ourselves. There's something incredibly satisfying about creating a custom piece that fits perfectly in our home. If you're into DIY, I'd be happy to show you our projects!

I started diving while living in Jordan and exploring the Red Sea, where I became a PADI Advanced Open Water diver. After a break, I've recently started diving again on a trip to Okinawa. I'm excited to get back into it more seriously, especially with some famous shark diving sites so close by! If you're a fellow diver, I'd be thrilled to host you and swap stories (mine are limited) or just go for a dive nearby.

On the geekier side of things, I run my own home server. It's a fun, ongoing project that I use for everything from home automation to managing my own data. I enjoy the challenge of making technology work for me and learning new things along the way.

For my personal trips, I'm trying to go for one-bag travel. I find it liberating to travel with less, embracing a more minimalist and flexible approach. It's a fun challenge to see how efficiently I can pack, and it allows me to be more spontaneous

Music, Movies, and Books

My taste is pretty eclectic. I love the charm and optimism of "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain," but also the raw emotion of "The Broken Circle Breakdown" (if you know, you know).

Musically, I'm open to anything from indie folk to classic rock. My Playlist changes monthly and might be completely unrecognizable, depending on what I was up to.

I'm always reading before bed, and I often find myself rereading Terry Pratchett's books—they're brilliant. If you've never read his work, I highly recommend it!"

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It's hard to choose just one, but a recent highlight was hiking through Alishan National Park in Taiwan to watch the sunrise. Seeing the first light appear over the Mountains was just a wow moment. Directly followed by the Monkeys trying to steal our Food.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love to learn anything you can give me, although my current focus is learning Japanese.
I am always interested in doing something with my Hands, I love doing DIY and am excited to learn something new.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm a considerate guest who is happy to cook, help keep the space tidy, and share my language knowledge. But most of all, I can share stories. As a nurse who has worked worldwide—from war zones and humanitarian contexts to cruise ships and hospitals of varying quality—I can tell a tale or two about the world and the people in it."
