Meeting locals and other fascinating people is one of the best parts of traveling :) I've met several fascinating people and even made good friends using Couchsurfing. Plus, I don't enjoy hotels and hostels too much.
Moreover, using Couchsurfing is typically more sustainable than staying in hotels.
