This is my sabbatical, a solo trip to Europe focused on people and public space in Dublin, London, Wales, Delft, Utrecht, Osnabruck, Beaune, and Paris. This time, I'm traveling without my wife or grown children, to spend time with friends and my German & Dutch relatives, hike in Wales with a childhood friend and travel for a bit with my sister and brother-in-law.

At the same time, I hope to gather perspective for my current challenge in city planning and urban design: exploring what works best for areas surrounding light rail stations, to help influence planning for Portland's final light rail line.

I will also be curating a cultural exchange in Utrecht to be shown in its sister city, Portland, OR, on the 100th anniversary of De Stijl.

My friends tell me I'm too modest for my own good, have a potent visual to functional to musical aesthetic side. I'm known to be thoughtful, zen-like, good at setting out to do things, discovering what it takes and getting those things done. They also say I'm unassuming, curious, calm, and soft-spoken. And mischievous.

I'm new to couch surfing, and I hope it will connect me to people who live in the places I'm studying, to experience places in a way richer than any other approach to traveling. I'm drawn to the unexpected encounter. I've come to couch surfing through close friends who are successful hosts who have many stories to tell. Cultural exchange.
