About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Enjoying the fact that I successfully escaped the South in one piece....

ABOUT ME

Living the dream in the one place I love the most. Tried as I might, I just couldn't stay away from this place for more than a few months at a time. So after finishing school (in a place that I hated), I figured the best thing for my well-being was to pack up my car and move back to the Hole for good. So far it's proving to be the best decision I've ever made.

PHILOSOPHY

I don't want to be that person who 20 years down the road stops and realizes that I haven't done anything interesting in my lifetime. I've reserved the next decade of my life for moving and traveling and just generally experiencing life outside the box. No "real" job in the near or even distant future for this girl. Why not instead teach English in Japan or work on an organic farm in New Zealand or spend four months in Antarctica? Seriously. Oh, and I've commited myself to the notion of setting foot on all seven continents by the time I am 30 years old. Rock.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Unfortunately, due to constant apartment-swapping, I haven't been a super-active participant. But the one thing I've been adamant about is at least spreading the word, letting people know that this is an option when traveling. So far I've convinced quite a few people to join.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I decided to give couchsurfing the ole college try in April 2005 on a two-week backpacking trip through Europe with my brother. I read an article about this new-fangled website in National Geographic Traveler and thought it just might be worth a shot. It seriously changed my life and the way I will travel in the future. I was continually surprised by how accommodating our hosts were. Not only were we treated like guests in everyone's homes, but these people rearranged their schedules to play tour guide and wax philosophic over a few pints of beers. How can you possibly have the same kind of experience if you stay at a hotel?

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Skydiving over the Bridger Mountain Range in Bozeman, Montana, and accidentally dropping my disposable camera in the process; partaking in a slumber party in Corbet's Cabin (in Jackson Hole) at an altitude of 10,450 feet; catching an intense display of the Northern Lights; meeting relatives my family didn't know existed while in Ireland; wandering around Inis Mor (the Aran Islands) solo while taking hundreds of photos and befriending livestock; bearing witness to the whole disaster that was Hurricane Katrina and the miserable state in which it left New Orleans; helping an elderly Welsh couple get back to their hotel that was three hours away after they were stranded by their tour group in a National Park in Crete; getting drunk off homemade Pepper Vodka with an entire Latvian family of seven in Riga while watching Problem Child 2 in their living room; dancing to "Sweet Home Alabama" on a tabletop at Oktoberfest in Germany and embracing my horrible inner tourist in the process...
