About Me

[2022 update: what happened to this place?! Just logged in after the pandemic and CS looks positively post-apocalyptic. the below is from the pre-Blip version of me. need to update it. But not before I've said my goodbyes to the old profile first. it harks back to a time of my life when I was less cynical, and that's kind of a good thing]

CURRENT MISSION

To find a good answer for this question.

ABOUT ME

Hi, i'm George.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Joined In The Year Of Our Lord 2009, after my friend Sia recommended it.

Didn't do much with it initially.
It later transpired that it contains the highest concentration of cool, interesting and all-round nice people on the planet. Somehow I slipped in too.

Moved to St Albans, joined the local group and eventually became one of the moderators. My self-appointed responsibilities were organising events, telling b(d?)ad jokes, spreading misinformation and chaos. Fun times.

Now back in London, and more of a CS part-timer. But as Portugal The Man says, i feel it still.

Interests

-Reading? Or more accurately, since I haven't finished one in a long time: surrounding myself in books.
-Travelling (doesn't get me any originality points in this place but there you go).
-Games (non digital ones). They need to a. be non-digital and b. create a narrative of some sort.
(Quality test: if it helps break the ice with a bunch of drunk strangers in a pub setting, it's a good game.)
-Trying different things. Outdoorsy stuff. Art galleries. Events. Posh doughnuts. Diving. Activities that involve movement. Anything where you use your body in different ways. patterns of tension and relaxation. how exploring / becoming conscious of these patterns unlocks our potential. on many levels.
...apparently i also like making lists.

Music, Movies, and Books

there's a list that's always changing.
i'll pick one that reminds me of couchsurfing, for each category.

-Book. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Highlights the importance of towels while you're travelling.
-Movie. "The secret life of Walter Mitty" has a certain anything-is-possible quality to it. Like couchsurfing - on a good day.
-Song. "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" - the lyrics (or rather the lyrics before the woman starts singing). Some people that I have a lot of time for, think it's corny. But it struck a chord first time I heard it. Even though I don't use sunscreen.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I got on a train just before the doors closed. ha.
beat that, random-instagram-page-with-people-on-a-boat-in-the-Caribbean.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach.. I can teach you how to read the greek alphabet in roughly 40 minutes.
Why you would want to learn that, i do not know.

Learn.. what tricks have you got up your sleeve?

Share... stories, passions. crazy ideas. random thoughts, visions for the future. The experience of discovering a place together. As Marcel Proust says: "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes". I can also dazzle you with cool quotes like this.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Bad jokes?

Luckily i'm not asking you to host me. If you're thinking "what's luck got to do with it", clearly you haven't heard me snoring.

Maybe that should be my mission. "try not to share the snoring too much".
