Music, Movies, and Books
I enjoy all types of movies. From classics to action to romantic comedies with zombies. Also, I tend to enjoy bad movies, since they make seeing a good movie that much better. If I was to list my five of my favorite movies: North by Northwest, Shawshank Redemption, Gladiator, Across the Universe, and Shawn of the Dead.
Books, I'd have to say: The Lord of the Rings, Patrick O'Brien books, Malcolm Gladwell books, classics, any Agatha Christie, I'll really pick up anything and give it a read.
As for Music, I guess alternative rock is my genre. Although, I like really anything, except most country, death metal, most newer pop songs. Favorite bands/artists are: Foo Fighters, Cat Empire, Queen, Sublime, Florence + the Machine.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
There are many stories of travelling that I have, but one that always sticks out in my memory is about going on a hike alone, near Mission Beach, Australia.I was 19 and invincible. Or at least, that's how I felt at that age. I had recently split from the rest of my travel group and found myself in a hostel in the small town of Mission Beach. Trying to figure out the best way to explore the area, I was told to do a rainforest hike on a nearby trail. Easy enough, I got a ride to the trailhead and began my ascent. It was a beautiful slow climb up an easy trail to a wonderful view point that overlooked the nearby ocean. As the sun began to set, I realized I had a 2 km hike to the bottom. For those who have been in dense forest before know, it gets dark very quick. I began jogging to get down faster but was having trouble seeing parts of the trail. About half way down the trail I came around a corner to find myself face to face with a Cassowary. These primeval looking birds are the third largest bird in the world and have a 12 cm dagger-like claw on their middle toe. It couldn't have been further than 5 metres away, minding its own business in the middle of the trail. They aren't an overly aggressive animal unless disturbed, but are an imposing looking bird. I snapped a picture (although it didn't turn out due to the light, therefore my friends like to say this story never happened), then tried to determine how to get by. I ultimately decided to detour around it through the dense brush. I rejoined the trail further along, and it hadn't moved from its spot. I got all the way back to the hostel unscathed. I learned several things from the experience, but it will always be a favourite memory.
