About Me

Hi!
I am Gergő, a fresh art high school graduate from Hungary. Before going to university to study filmmaking I want to take a break, travel around the world to get to know new cultures, languages and people while doing volunteer work.
I grow up in a little village so I have a deep connection to nature. From an early age I went for big trips and just photographed what intersted me. This and my parents effected me to turn to filmmaking, we have a little studio and we are actively making films with my friends for six years now.
I am motivated by opportunities that allow me to learn, grow, and contribute in a meaningful way. I enjoy adapting to new environments, developing practical skills, and gaining a deeper understanding of different cultures through shared experiences. I am open to new situations and people, I want to learn as much as possible about the world. I help where I can, I respect the new environment and the rules.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I’m couchsurfing because I’m currently traveling alone, and I really enjoy having company — people I can share my experiences with, and whose stories I can learn from as well. I want to meet as many new people as possible, and I think this way of traveling offers a great opportunity to do that. I’m a very social person, but at the same time I fully respect when someone needs more personal space — I sometimes need that too, to recharge.

I’m not really into the big tourist attractions; I often feel that locals can show me more interesting places and events, and they naturally have a much deeper understanding of their city than any travel website ever could.

I lived in a dormitory for a long time, and during my travels it’s been common for me to have roommates, so I’m used to new environments. I adapt easily and don’t need much.
Overall, I think couchsurfing is a perfect way to build new connections with people from all around the world!

Music, Movies, and Books

I really enjoy jazz, and when I play the saxophone I mostly focus on improvisation. Whenever I get the chance, I join jam sessions — they’re a great opportunity to meet other musicians and draw inspiration from them. Before I picked up the saxophone four years ago, I played the clarinet for six years, but recently the sax has taken on a much bigger role in my life.

I listen to a wide range of music, from classical and rap to Balkan and Hungarian folk, as well as electronic music and techno. My newest musical obsession is Japanese electro-synthpop from the 1980s; one of my favorite bands is Yellow Magic Orchestra. I’m also a big fan of a Hungarian band called Balaton and a French artist named Roland Christal.

I’m really into films, and I try to watch a movie every day (although I often fail at that — still, I like the commitment). I could write a long essay about the golden age of Hungarian cinema and about great directors from around the world, but for now I’ll just mention the filmmakers who have influenced me the most (and if we meet in real life, we can have a longer conversation on this topic:). Internationally, my favorites include David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Aki Kaurismäki, Radu Jude, and Jim Jarmusch. From the Hungarian side, I love the work of Béla Tarr, Attila Janisch, Sándor Sára, and Miklós Jancsó.

I’m also trying to read more and more. My favorite author at the moment is László Krasznahorkai (a Hungarian — he just won the Nobel Prize in Literature!!). I also really enjoy Bohumil Hrabal and Franz Kafka.

Teach, Learn, Share

As you probably know by now, filmmaking is my main field, but I’d really love to gain new knowledge in music, philosophy, permaculture, literature, history, physics — and honestly, in anything you’d like to share with me. I feel like I’m at a stage in my life where everything interests me. I’m open to learning from you and to sharing my own knowledge, my perspective on the world, and my experiences.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can offer a helping hand, an energetic yet humble personality, and of course I’m always happy to show my short films if someone is interested! I am really open to share my limited knowledge on filmmaking, my experiences from the writing through editing to the final creation! I can also share my stories and the adventures I’ve had during my short but meaningful travels. I can teach you a few Hungarian phrases, and I’d be glad to introduce you to my culture and cuisine:)
