I found out couchsurfing is the best way to travel and make friends at the same time, you get to live like a local and exchange experiences. Besides, I love the spirit of the thing, this feeling of mutual help.
This may sound funny, but I also feel safer when I travel with couchsurfing. I usually travel alone, and feels good to know that there'll be one known person.
