About Me

Going through residency and not being consumed by medicine.

I'm Colt.

And if I drink oblivion of a day, so shorten I the stature of my soul.

Fret not thyself, and let go displeasure, else shalt thou be moved to do evil.

The heart can be filled anywhere on earth.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Just getting started - will probably be able to do more hosting than traveling in the future (because of clinical rotations) but I look forward to meeting new people and sharing experiences.

Medicine, meeting people, frequent quiet, canoeing, machining, farm work, operating steam traction engines, elbow room, the banjo, cooking, history (what's past is prologue, right?), Lake Superior, cross country skiing, good dark beer, and random outdoor adventures.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, The Brothers Karamazov, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Canoeing with the Cree by Eric Sevareid, and the Truman biography by David McCullough. Music - Pandora to the Jayhawks, otherwise I'm often tuned into the Current or MPR news. Movies: The Sting, The Road to Perdition, The Game, The Shawshank Redemption. I don't own a TV.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Had a cup of coffee in Skorped, Sweden with Ole Olofsson, my grandfather's first cousin. Ole was over 90 at that time, and remembered having coffee with my grandfather's grandfather, a man born in the 1850s, in Skorped in the 1920s. Amazing.

Teach, Learn, Share

Want to learn - I'm just starting to learn to play the banjo, and would love lessons/interaction with those who can play.

Random hobbies of my own - Boundary Waters canoe trip outfitting, Great Lakes history, machining, auctioneering, and operating steam traction engines (I have my MN state boiler license).

Countries I’ve Visited

Belize, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Vatican City State

Countries I’ve Lived In

Austria, Sweden, United States
