To cross the United States on our bicycles, learn from the people we meet, and educate communities on sustainable practices!

ABOUT ME

GreenRide is a group of 15 (or so) individuals. We will ride our bicycles from Ithaca, New York to Bellingham, Washington, which are both cities with a strong environmental ethic.

Along the way, we will stop in small communities every 60-120 miles to meet with residents and discuss pertinent environmental issues.

In each community, we aim to provide a friendly, casual presentation on and discussion of specific ways to improve the environmental quality of the area. These presentations will be tailored to the strengths and interests of each community, and will include sustainable agriculture, saving money through sustainability, alternative energy sources, saving energy in private homes, healthy and organic eating, and information on local projects with which residents might not be familiar.

We will also include discussions with school groups or summer camps on how children can get involved, stay healthy, and enjoy their environment.

A second part of our goal is raising awareness, helping people realize that our planet is changing, and explaining why we need to adapt to and hopefully limit these changes.

We would also like to encourage people to recognize and appreciate natural beauty and the recreational opportunities it affords, thus creating a greater push for preservation of local ecosystems.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

In the summer of 2009, we will be travelling from Ithaca, NY to Bellingham, WA. We'd love to stop in both rural, suburban, and urban communities along the way. If you think your community would enjoy a visit from us, please let us know - we will custom create a presentation and discussion for you, and happily ask/answer as many questions as we/you can think of. We're also attempting to find places to sleep, camp, shower, and eat along the way, so that our fundraised money can be donated to the communities and organizations we visit rather than hotels and McDonalds.

Our goal is to help the people we meet understand why a sustainable lifestyle is better than an unsustainable one. Hopefully our diverse educations, interests, and upbringings will provide a large base of knowledge that you can draw from and discuss with us. We also want to learn from you - what can you teach us about your environment - your lifestyle, your career, your family, your religion - that will help us become better educators and community members?
