ABOUT ME

I'm curious, fun-loving and somewhat goofy w/friends and mates. I love talking about politics (I'm lefty/progressive), reading all kinds of books that are not required for school (somehow those are so much better!), getting drinks or going dancing with friends, learning how to cook (healthily - this is a recent goal of mine and i love to cook with and for others), thrift shopping/value hunting, and music (listening, sharing, concerts, singing).

I like cycling around on my new road bike. Madison is great in the summer! I'm playing on a very non-competitive local softball league for the summer too. I also play racketball about once a week during the winter. I'm not a very competitive person, but this stuff is fun.

I'm a teaching assistant in the dept. of sociology at UW Madison. I like teaching a lot, though it's hard work and is sometimes hard to balance with coursework and other stuff. I'm pretty good at it though.

My eventual goal is to be a professor in Sociology or Geography or Race and Ethnic studies with a venue for public sociology and linkages to organizations committed to social change. I'm currently starting on a masters project on gentrification and race/ethnicity.

PHILOSOPHY

My outlook is somewhere between realist and idealist. I value keeping an open [non-judgmental] mind while working towards a better life for myself and society more generally. I am plagued by questions, however, of how to do the latter. Because it depends on everyone else's philosophy/values that may not align with mine or the liberal/hippie/utopic vision I have.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I just started here, and I don't have a great place for people to stay yet, but I plan to start just by surfing, getting to know people,and showing people around that come to Madison.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I don't have any yet. I was turned onto the site by two of my friends who are couch-surfing veterans and hope to get some soon!

I saw the northern lights one night during my stay on the boundary waters in Northern Minnesota one summer. It was too beautiful for words.

I would love to talk in Spanish and English with someone trying to learn either language. I'm trying to keep up my Spanish language skills by meeting with some friends once a week to speak the language.
