About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Saving up enough money to go to the Rubik's Cube World Championships in Las Vegas in 2013

ABOUT ME

Well hello,

As this is the section to tell something about myself, let's start at the beginning. I'm Hwee-Chong. I'm a 33 year old Dutch guy, living in Eindhoven. As my name might suggest, I'm from Chinese descent but I was born and raised in The Netherlands. I lived in the UK for 7 years for studies and work.

I studied Theology and have a teaching qualification in Religious Studies. But because of lack of jobs in my field, I'm currently working for a webshop selling batteries, where I collect orders and make them ready to be sent off to the customers. It's not a great job, but at least I'm lucky enough to have a job. I'll be going back to university in September to do a masters degree in Christianity and Society and hopefully do a PhD afterwards.

I like to to think of myself as a friendly and easy-going person. Other people have said to me that I'm good at making people feel at ease. I can be somewhat shy and reserved to start off with, but once I feel at ease, I'm good company. Apparently, I have a good sense of humour. I don't know why people think that. I don't think I'm that funny, to be honest.

In my free time, I spend most of my time playing the guitar and solving Rubik's cubes as fast as possible (speedcubing). Actually, most of the time that I'm looking for a couchsurfing place, it's because I'm attending a competition somewhere and need a place to stay. So, if you want to learn how to solve one yourself, I'm happy to teach you :-) If I have some inspiration, I like to write on my blog. Unfortunately, I've been quite low on inspiration recently, but some good couchsurfing experiences may well provide some much needed inspiration.

So, there you go. That's me in a nutshell.

PHILOSOPHY

I'm a committed Christian. Don't worry, I'm not a Bible basher. Having said that, I do have a couple of Bibles, which are ideally suited for that purpose. Just kidding.

For me, being a Christian means that I believe in Jesus Christ and in what the Bible says about Him. I also try to live my life as Jesus taught us to live. As a couchsurfer, that means that I want to provide a friendly and welcome place to stay for couchsurfers and that I will be respectful and considerate to my hosts.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I want to host people at my flat and meet people across the world by surfing couches.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My only couchsurfing experience was a few months ago in Enschede. I wasn't a couchsurfer myself at the time, but just tagged along with another couch surfer.

Interests

I play the guitar and solve Rubik's cubes. Those are my main interests. I also like writing on my blog and reading.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Climbing Snowdon. First and only time I climbed a mountain in my life. I was at university in Bangor and wanted to climb Snowdon all that time, but it took me 3 years to get the opportunity to do it, just after my last exams. It was tough and I was badly out of shape, even though I was used to going up and down hills to get to lectures. But once up there, it was great and an experience I won't easily forget.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to solve a Rubik's cube. I also know some good lateral and logic thinking puzzles/problems. I also know a lot of random facts, which are completely useless in everyday life, but are fun to know and can help you win a pub quiz.
