ABOUT ME
Hello, my name is Heeyawl. As Heeyawl means “Bliss” in Korean, I try to live up to my name.
First of all, I will briefly present my past profile and introduce my three ongoing interests – Fencing, French, Fairy tales.
After I graduated early from science high school, I entered at Yonsei university when I was 18 years old. I am double-majoring in mathematics and French Literature.
I am an amateur fencer. I have gotten several silver and bronze medals in woman’s individual foil. Fencing is a sport that can be won or lost in a matter of split seconds. So, I have learned agility, rapid judgment and initiative from this sport.
As many other sports, fencing also gave me some useful lessons about how to handle stressful situations. This picture is taken when I participated in my first competition. I was losing by a score of 1: 7. Most of spectators thought I was going to lose. Suddenly, I made the score even and we had 14-14 score. Shortly after, I won.
The most important thing I’ve learned from fencing is “There’s no need to feel small in front of the strong. In this picture, the left is last year’s winner and the right is me. We met in quarterfinal. This is the moment I tied the score. Finally, I won and got bronze medal. From this game, I learned that I had the ability to turn the tables.
My second interest is French. I started learn French in 2010. I am a fast learner in any language except English. As I was fond of my new interest, my improvement in French was remarkable. And now, I work as an amateur French-Korean translator.
My last interest is in Fairy Tales. While I was writing many articles as a student journalist, I realized I love writing. And I want to be a writer who writes beautiful stories, especially for children.
Fairy Tales are my favorite children’s stories. I have brought a story with me. This is a story of “very hungry caterpillar.” This caterpillar is very hungry no matter how much he eats. One apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday so on and so forth. However he is still hungry. On Sunday, he ate through one nice green leaf, finally, he wasn’t hungry any more- and he wasn’t a little caterpillar any more. He was big and fat. He then became a beautiful butter fly. I like the simplicity and the moral of the story.
