About Me

CURRENT MISSION

The world is my playground.

ABOUT ME

I started traveling the summer of 2007 and have lived on the go ever since. I have no specific home base, my backpack accounts for all my possessions, in a way I'm always home.

I started hitchhiking and couch surfing early on, traveling like this has proven to be enlightening and sustainable for several years now. I'm also occasionally on buses, planes or boats, sometimes in hotels, hostels or camping.

A month is about the longest I've been in one particular place, but usually just a few days at a time unless I have some project or odd job I'm working on.

PHILOSOPHY

Good times.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've surfed with a lot of people in different parts of the world. For a little while I was able to get free hotel rooms in Las Vegas and I would host up to 10 people at a time there when I could. I also went up to Alaska in 2008 to participate in the collective with this site's tech team, that was awesome and I made some great lifelong friends.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've been blown away by everyone on Couchsurfing and my success so far in finding places to stay with great people all over the world.

Interests

I wrote a book combining two of my biggest interests, hitchhiking and beer. It's called A Six-Pack of Hitchhiking Stories. https://amzn.to/2IynlFm

I created the show "Hopping" that also combines these two interests. The first season features my friend and I hitchhiking in the western USA to really awesome breweries: https://www.youtube.com/Hopping

I designed a backpack that turns into a tent, so I've been really interested in creating more hiking/travel gear and clothing. https://www.freestyletravelgear.com/product-page/bivypack

I also started a podcast called the Freestyle Travel Show recently, so I love whenever I get a chance to record an episode from the road either telling stories or interviewing people I meet to hear their story or chat about some specific travel topic. (http://www.freestyletravelshow.com)

I love brewing beer and sampling all the great craft beer of the world. Local breweries are usually my default landing spots when visiting new towns, they're great places to meet people and find out what's going on in the area.

I also do a fair amount of writing, hiking, camping, eating of the spiciest foods available, some website development (usually travel related), watching basketball, wandering and putting myself in situations to do things I haven't thought of.

Music, Movies, and Books

dumb & dumber, grizzly man, on the road

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I hitched a ride trying to get ten miles down the road and wound up flying a helicopter over Queenstown, New Zealand.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can talk about hitchhiking for days, I've hitched all over the world and have tons of stories and advice.

I love sharing tips on ultralight travel and hiking, let's help each other carry less and move even more freely! I'd love to learn more about sewing and otherwise fabricating custom gear.

I went to school for audio and had a huge passion for that, from recording music to adding sound effects to cartoons.

I've brewed beer all over the place, seen a lot of advanced and extremely basic ways of doing so. I've inspired some friends to start brewing and it's great to come back and see what they've made.

I also know a bit about programming (javascript, html, css, php). I'm reasonably tech savvy, but I'm interested in learning more about the hardware side of things.

I'm always up for learning some new things.
