PHILOSOPHY

For a considerable time now, I have been obsessively inquiring into questions of meaning (as in, 'what brings meaning to my life', not in the semantics sense), and how meaning is found in different contexts of being - for example, in modern capitalist society and in alternative modes of existence based more on community or connection to nature. I've been thinking and thinking and thinking about the interplay between meaning, connection, the self, identity, doing, being.... and not having reached a definite conclusion yet, can only say that I feel that there is a very scarily ignored lack of meaning in our present-day mainstream society. Out of personal experience, I have felt different levels of meaning and joy in life, and still am getting to the bottom of what characterizes and causes the differences. I also tentatively hypothesize that the most meaningful state of existence is one in which we view ourselves not with fixed identity; instead, with our selves laid bare... as processes, rather than products.

I am always eager to engage in discussion about such stuff, so don't hesitate if you want to have a nice conversation about any of this or something else like it. : )

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I live on campus in a dorm room, so I sadly can't host anyone, but I'd love to meet up with whoever's around in the area.

1. Creating a world where everyone finds meaning in life, which would hopefully lead to us not having to rely on the self-destructive machinistic society we are all to differing extents today cogs in.

Musica, film e libri

Music: Rock - Alternative, indie, experimental, punk-ish, classic, prog-metal... pretty much anything, depending on my mood. Some of my favorite bands are Radiohead, the Clash, Chumbawamba, Nirvana, Porcupine Tree, Kasabian, the National, The Killers, Beatles, Doors... ahh, I'm rambling now.

Books - I love books. Though I don't read as much as I'd like. My favorite authors include Harper Lee (To Kill A Mockingbird), Kurt Vonnegut, (recently) Chuck Palahniuk, Malcolm Gladwell, Douglas Adams, and pretty much any counter-cultural writer/radical theorist.

Movies - Matrix trilogy, Brazil, Fight Club, American Beauty - my favorite English ones.

The most amazing experience I've had, one that I may even in hindsight say to have bordered on the transcendental, was in the mountains - After a strenuous trek, I reached a plateau in the lower Himalayas, and laid my eyes upon the grandest, most mighty mountains on the Earth for the first time.. which were at that moment in the midst of a dancing drapery of thunder and rainclouds. Words fall short of what I felt then.

I can give anyone who's interested a basic picture of Hindustani classical vocal music, which I have learnt for over thirteen years. I can also give an introduction to the wonderful sport of cricket, or to the languages Hindi and Gujarati.

I'm very interested in learning how to screenprint and ride a longboard, and in the natural diversity of wherever I happen to be.
