I'm a merchant navy officer from Newcastle looking to make the most of my long periods I get off work. I travel extensively with my job, but you can never see enough new places, can you? If a city has some interesting history or some good beer I plan on going there eventually, and most cities meet one of those criteria somehow!

I could go and stay in a hotel and see the tourist attractions and I'd see exactly the same thing that millions before me had seen. I might as well Google the place or read Wikipedia. I'd rather see the proper place, talk to the people that live there, hear the stories and the opinions and meet friends in strange lands.

兴趣

I'm a fan of massive bustling cities, for the first few days at least, although how anyone lives in them I have no idea. Maybe it's being from a small town (and even Newcastle, the nearest city, is small), but I think they're amazing and I don't know how people can be so blasé about the places when they live there. Otherwise I'm a bit of a cinephile, and do like to watch a lot of classic films, though I tend to steer clear of the full on pretentious stuff. I like good beer as well, I'm a bit spoilt coming from England (especially the North) and I'll take a lot of convincing that our beers aren't the best in the world. The Belgians run it pretty close though.

Musically I quite like singer songwriter folky stuff. I'm a huge fan of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, and listen to the likes of Townes van Zandt, Paul Simon, Jim Croce and Carole King (to name just a few).
I read a but of everything, a lot of classics though, I think life is too short to read bad books.
Film wise I watch a fair bit, tend to stay away from the huge blockbusters (that's not to say I don't like a good action film) and stray towards some smaller budget films. I like the British film scene, I think we have fantastic actors and prefer the pacing compared to Hollywood films.
