About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Pursuing life, and prepared to meet my doom along the way!

ABOUT ME

I'm one of many, many recent graduates who've had to stay with family for lack of a job to pay the rent. In my case, that situation became unsafe, so I am currently traveling around California until one of several job leads finally decides to materialize!

I've traveled to Europe twice, I spent a year in Honduras, and most recently I participated in the Episcopal Service Corps at a placement with a low-income housing agency. (Right smack dab between federal budget sequestration and the federal government shutdown, no less - very interesting times!)

I have a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor and I don't like taking things for granted. Also, I play guitar and write songs, but my vocals make Yoko Ono sound like a virtuoso.

PHILOSOPHY

Material conditions! Historical/socioeconomic context!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Generally, whenever I don't have a set place to stay for whatever reason (economics, family situation, etc), I turn to couch-surfing for shelter. I've done this twice before. Once I get a place of my own, I will also make my home available to couch surfers, but economics have prevented that from becoming an option so far.

I tend to keep to myself, but it's not because I'm shy or uninterested in my hosts as people; the etiquette that I was raised on emphasizes keeping out of the way and minimizing demands upon the time and resources of others. If you want to, like, get to know me and stuff, I'm totally down for that, but I'd rather commit seppuku than impose my personality upon others in an *unsolicited* manner.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I stayed a couple times in Oakland last year after a disastrous teaching experience in Honduras that twice led to near-deportation.

Interests

I'm obsessed with guitar and song-writing. Unfortunately, I can't sing, but I do hope to find a vocalist and a drummer to get a band put together some day. Or I tell myself that to make it sound like I have ambitions, goals, plans etc.

As a former political science major, I'm also interested in national and world events. Honestly, I don't care too much for party politics, though; I think Emma Goldman put it best when she said, "If voting changed anything, they'd make it illegal." Or maybe that's just my inner Marxist speaking. (Or anarchist. Or whatever.) Feminism and anti-racist activism are also important.

Music, Movies, and Books

Uh...Dostoyevsky, Howard Zinn, Nikolai Gogol, Graham Greene, & Edith Wharton for books. Music? Local H, Builders & The Butchers, 16 Horsepower, Failure, Interpol, Brooke Waggoner, Joy Division, Soundgarden, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, The Tubes, Carole King, etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I went 19 months without sleeping in a bed. W00t.

Teach, Learn, Share

If you're staying in Honduras and you take a trip to El Salvador, don't ever take a bus back in to Honduras. The border guards will wave your bus through instead of getting on board to give everybody entry stamps and visa slips, because they're assuming everybody on the bus is a citizen of a country in the CA-4 agreement.

Countries I’ve Visited

France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom

Countries I’ve Lived In

Honduras, United States
