spending nights in a cloistered convent while helping to build an art studio for a community center in the Bronx, New York (The key to the front door was massive - over a foot long and cast metal - the front doors were also enormous. None of the nuns were allowed to speak to me.)

One of the best and slowest conversations I’ve had was in a train compartment traveling from Beijing to Xian. My broken Mandarin wasn’t much to go on, but there was a Japanese traveler who spoke English and a Chinese couple who were up for the challenge – they would ask something in Mandarin, which neither the Japanese traveler nor I would understand, then write it down and pass it along to be read in Japanese and then translated into English for me. The response would then be written in Japanese and passed to the Chinese couple who could read and understand the written text. It helped that it was a very long train ride – plenty of time for slow written/spoken exchange.
