Overview
About Me
I'm a pretty laid-back and calm person which is why I normally travel more like a middle-aged dad than an 18 year old student. The exception to that were trips I used to go on back in high school. Unfortunately, the way those trips were planned only allowed us to stay in one place for a day or two. In other words, it was quantity over quality, which explains why I've been all over Central/Western Europe and still don't know it too well. However, I aim to change that which is part of the reason why I'm here.
I've gone backpacking in the Carpathian mountains in Western Ukraine several times. That is quite a feat for a smoker who enjoys junk food a bit too much and hardly ever does anything sports-related. In my case, the destination was more important than the path, contrary to the popular saying. It's hard to enjoy yourself while you're going uphill in 35 degree weather with a backpack that's about the third of your weight, but the view from the peak of Ukraine's highest mountain is absolutely worth it.
I wouldn't exactly describe myself as an introvert, I simply value my privacy and I do need to recharge after social interactions from time to time. Despite that, I would absolutely be willing to talk to you about whatever you're interested in, depending on the circumstances of course. I like to keep my living space tidy and comfortable, so you shouldn't be afraid of me making a huge mess in your residence. I only drink occasionally when I have absolutely nothing else to do, which won't be the case in a new country where there's so much to explore.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
This may sound like a cliche (probably because that's exactly what it is), but I am willing to step out of my comfort zone in order to expand it. As of right now, I am planning a trip with a group of friends who recommended Couchsurfing and I thought I'd give it a try. I could, of course, stay in a hotel like the boring traveller I usually am, but from what I hear, Couchsurfing provides a more exciting (and cheaper) experience.
Music, Movies, and Books
I used to listen to a lot of hip-hop and punk rock, but these days I'm more into psychedelic rock from the 60's (The Doors being the most obvious example).
As far as literature is concerned, I don't read nearly as much fiction as I used to. The reason for that is the fact that the educational process of a philosophy student mainly consists of reading various monographies, which leaves me with no time or desire to look at anything containing letters for any longer. If I had to pick a couple of favourites though, I'd pick "The Good Soldier Švejk" by Jaroslav Hašek and "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess.
I'm more into TV series than films, although I never miss a new Tarantino movie. Kubrick's adaptation of "A Clockwork Orange" is also among my favourites. I'm into "Game of Thrones" (who isn't?) and anti-hero series such as "The Sopranos" and "Breaking Bad".
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Nothing worth sharing here, at least in my opinion.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach you the basics of Ukrainian or Russian. Of course, I won't make you a fluent speaker, but hopefully, by the end of my stay you will be able to read the alphabet, order a coffee or tell someone to leave you alone in a less than polite manner.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I'm a pretty good cook, at least I can follow any given recipe well enough, so if you ever want/need me to cook dinner, I can try and take care of that. If you want, I can get you a souvenir from Ukraine. I keep hearing great things about our chocolate, you might want to try it.
