ABOUT ME

I'm mom to a rough & tumble toddler, Jasper, and a tiny baby girl, Kestrel. I left my Ph.D. program last year and, aside from the full-time work of mothering, am not quite sure what comes next. I'm married to one of my best friends. After spending five years living in Ithaca, NY, I'm more certain than ever that the Northwest is home. I love riding bikes: fast, slow, over hill and dale or just home from the store laden with groceries. I like purpose-built bicycles, and enjoy testing the limits of what my bike can hold. I lead a monthly bike ride for kids and families (http://kidicalmasspdx.org), and if you're in town on the third Saturday of the month you're welcome to join us. We don't have a car, so Jasper, Kestrel, Dave and I travel mainly by bike. I've just bought a banjo and I'm excited to learn how to play it.

I like to make useful things: quilts, furniture, clothes, beer. I like to grow vegetables, and to cook. I like to find ways to live well with less.

My graduate work was in the History of Science, and I can talk about it forever if you ask me. But even with all that knowledge in my head, I don't know what I'd like to do with my life. Maybe you can help me figure it out?

My favorite part of traveling is meeting interesting new people. Since my life now doesn't allow for much travelling, I love to host and bring interesting new people to me! I love my city, and I want to help you come to love it too.

I've formally taught university classes on the history of western science, the history of physics, the sociology of computing, and biomedical ethics, and college writing. I'm an expert on early 19th-century American science, especially surveying and telescopes.

I can teach you how to make beer, or how to quilt, or how to do basic sewing, or how to plan a garden, or how to can fruits and vegetables, or how to do basic bike repair and maintenance.
