About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To be a practical, principled, and party-going guy.

ABOUT ME

I am gay, a native Austinite, and my second favorite beer is Lone Star: it's just a tried and true, no frills brew that I can deeply appreciate after a long day of work (or during a nice happy hour someplace like the Jackalope).

I am something of a radical socialist. I listen to KUT 90.5 and NPR on a regular basis, and I believe in the power of electrical engineering to rescue the planet. I'm really interested in sustainable coexistence. I ride my bicycle everywhere, and sometimes use the bus for longer trips.

Also, I'm not stuck up as my intro might lead you to believe. I know that Lone Star isn't all that good, and that socialism is synonymous with the end of modern civilization as we know it. But hey, just take it lightly like I do: it all won't matter if this supervolcano underneath Yellowstone decides to erupt. We're all fucked, then!

Seriously, google "supervolcano."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Hosted a guy from Cologne while he was traveling the US.
I have met people at home and while traveling who have offered to let me stay with them. I'm a considerate house guest & I like to be as minimally invasive when I travel: putting away my luggage when I'm out of the house, washing dishes when I use them, etc. But I also like to crack open a bottle with my host while sharing stories & experiences.

Music Genres: Art Rock, 50s Lounge, Jazz Standards, Soul, Folk Rock, Post Rock, Fado, Ranchera, Glam Rock, Negro Spirituals, Psychobilly, Queercore, Zydeco

My favorite live band right now is Opposite Day. Their albums are good, too, but I love them live. They're a lot of fun to dance all crazy to. Another great local band is Fatback Circus.

Music artists of mention: Ana Egge, Aretha Franklin, Björk, Blondie, Cream, The Cure, Dengue Fever, Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Ella Fitzgerald, Erykah Badu, Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, Kris Delmhorst, Lenny Kravitz, Lila Downs, Peggy Lee, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, Nina Simone, Sekoya, Candi Staton, Virgin-Whore Complex, Peter, Paul and Mary, Janis Joplin, John Mayer, Joni Mitchell, Gloria Estefan, Selena, Cher, Bernadette Peters, Maria Callas.

My favorite movie is Dancer in the Dark. My favorite Disney movie is The Sword in the Stone. Other movies: The Lives of Others, Frida, The Fall, Children of Men, Party Girl, Dogma, The Onion Movie.

TV: Scrubs, Absolutely Fabulous, MASH, The IT Crowd, The Golden Girls (yes, it's a guilty pleasure).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was part of the 2010 New York City Gay Pride March as a section leader, right behind Lt. Dan Choi, who was one of the Grand Marshalls. He was extremely motivated and energetic, hopping out of the car to high-five the crowd and running around. It really made me feel proud to be a gay American, knowing there were good people like Lt. Choi fighting for our civil rights.
