Hostels have always treated me well, and I love meeting other travelers. But here I'm looking for a way to meet locals in an attempt to not only see a new place but understand it too, something only a resident can offer.

Tough one. I don't like talking about myself like a sales pitch (who does, really?) but I was proud of myself when I left a certain place because I wasn't happy there. I had planned to stay for a few months in another country with a host who turned out to be the stuff of nightmares. I had no other plans and no place to stay but I left anyway with not much to lose except that guarantee of remaining safe but unhappy. Three days later was the best day of my life.
