One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
From September 2008 until February 2009 I lived and worked in Sinuiju, North Korea as a member of an NGO. My primary tasks were to interview the households and institutions receiving USAID food assistance and to monitor the distribution of food shipments from a central port to the various counties of North Pyongan Province. Living in North Korea has been one of the defining experiences of my life and has since galvanized my life-long commitment to Korea studies, the social sciences, and to cultivating empathy and understanding across ideological and cultural fractures.
