About Me

Traveling the world, until I decide it's a good time to stop.. (probably never)

In 2011, I got sick of the daily grind and decided to make a risky move. I bought a one-way ticket to a country I had never been to, quit a $40,000 a year job, sold almost everything I owned and moved to Spain. It is still one of the best decisions I have ever made though! I spent a few months teaching and working at a tapas bar in Barcelona, then a taught university students in Turkey for nearly a year and and then went and taught in Taiwan for 8 months before leaving to travel Southeast Asia and go home to start grad school.

I am getting a double master's in International Studies and Environment & Natural Resources and am so thankful to have moved to the middle of nowhere in Wyoming to do it. It's cold as hell (down to -40° C/F at times), but there are so many opportunities here, it's a bit shocking. Thanks to a very generous department, I have been able to continue traveling extensively even while getting my master's which I am extremely grateful for. Eventually, I would like to do Sustainable Development work.. Go Green! Until then, I'm just studying, traveling and helping out, one student or Couchsurfer at a time :)

"I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel." -Rosalia de Castro

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference." -Robert Frost

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I think Couchsurfing is a great program; a way of helping out good people in need, meeting like-minded travelers and allowing us to either experience a new city with a local or be a tour guide for our own city, likely seeing/doing things we don't often experience.

I have done quite a bit of surfing in Turkey and around Europe and Asia. I have had great experiences with almost all of them. This is why I'm offering my couch to others, in the hopes that I can help someone when they need it. What goes around, comes around. Plus, I'm always excited to meet new people!

Food, languages, football (American and fútbol), cooking, traveling, wine, basketball, the outdoors, music of all kinds, micro beers, sunsets, learning, the beach, politics, renewable/sustainable energy & development, art, shopping, history, friends, laughter...the usual :)

Music, Movies, and Books

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I mostly read books about traveling and the experiences of travelers, though I also bury my nose in non-fictions on international affairs, politics, the environment, economics, sustainability in a variety of forms, etc.

My taste in music varies greatly though I most frequently listen to indie pop/rock. Some of my favorite bands include: Two Door Cinema Club, Sin Fang, Chet Faker, Tame Impala, Alt-J, Foster the People, Young the Giant, Blondfire, etc. etc.

I didn't watch much TV/movies (except Sports Center) before I left home, but now I find myself watching movies quite often. It's a nice way to decompress after a long day, especially when enjoyed with a good dinner.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

If I had to pick a few things I have "earned bragging rights for", I would say: El Clásico (Barça won), being covered from head to toe and standing in foot deep tomato guts in Bruñol for La Tomatina, Munich for opening day of Oktoberfest, watching the fireworks over Kowloon Bay in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year, riding down the canals of Venice in the middle of the night, sending off a lantern at the Lantern Festival in Pingxi Taiwan, watching RHCP in Croatia, snorkeling off a gorgeous island in Indonesia, partying my ass off at a Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, watching the Ticos win multiple World Cup games while in Costa Rica, seeing the sunset over the Eiffel Tower and Seine River in Paris, scuba diving on the Bay Islands of Honduras, herding cattle in Chile, windsurfing in the Mediterranean off the coast of Turkey, hiking volcanoes in Nicaragua, experiencing the feeling you get right before you jump out of an airplane...twice, elephant trekking through Phuket and being present for protests demanding revolutionary changes; both in Spain and in Turkey.

It is worth noting though that I have found most of the most memorable experiences I've had were the simplest ones. Good times with good company likely accompanied by good food/drinks; those are the best memories.

Teach, Learn, Share

I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life. Those who are educated, have traveled, have opinions and legitimate reasons for them, are open minded, have a sense of humor, can cook a great meal or at the very least appreciate one, enjoy watching sports, love a good beer, listen to awesome music of any kind (I'm always ready to hear my next soon-to-be favorite band/song, and I don't discriminate based on style or language), those who store random facts about nothing important, or a great deal of knowledge of something they are passionate about...obviously I would never expect all of these things from one person, but if you possess one or many of these traits, it's likely we will get along great! I am happy to share my experiences and always excited to hear about others'.
