About Me

Hello there, i am James and i would rather know about you, but here's a little of me:
I am a mushroom farmer and researcher, and vegetable grower and I want to create a community center to teach people about fungi and plants, how to nurture them and purify the environment in partnership with them. First though i am travelling to understand more about my plans and myself but most importantly about other people, cultures and communities. So my favorite thing to do really is learn from people with different backgrounds and experiences (similar backgrounds are also accepted ;) and share what i have learnt and witnessed in my time. My favourite colour is deep cosmic purple-blue with white flecks, like a clear star-filled night sky. I play guitar, drums, a bit of piano, and i love singing (although im shy about it). i like to paint too, and sculpt...and have discussions where at the end of them you feel like you've learned something new, or seen a different side.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Because i want to meet new people, spend time with locals. In March I'm travelling to Japan, to Shodoshima, to work on a traditional log-culture shiitake farm. Hopefully i can connect to some locals through couchsurfing.

Music, Movies, and Books

Elliott Smith, Fela Kuti, Cat Power, Tori Amos, Queens of the Stoneage, David Bowie, The Pixies, Björk, Aphex Twin, Maskanda music, Moka Boka, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin (RIP), The left hand of Darkness, Uprooted, the Bear and the Nightingale, Mycelium Running... everything, everything as long as it moves you

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

well, not when i was awake, but i had a dream once that i jumped off the top of a huge blizzard-blasted mountain with my best friend in a canoe shaped like a bird, and then flew down over the snow-topped pine trees and cabins with steam venting from their chimneys, towards the ocean where we landed and paddled off into the golden flaming orange sunset.
In my waking life, i spent over a month travelling the west coast of central and north america, where i trecked through the rainforests of the olympic penninsula, visited the nations of indian natives and foraged for food in the old growth redwood forests, meeting the most wonderful strangers, both humans and animals, along the way

Teach, Learn, Share

i can teach you about plants and mushrooms if you'd like, although maybe you know more than me. I am very fascinated by fungi and i think they can help us survive on this planet and confront the problems we are facing environmentally..... I like to share music too, and stories, and perspectives.

What I Can Share with Hosts

i like to think i'm a good cook and love cooking for people. I can share my english sensibilities (aha), and stories of my time alive. I'd be happy to teach some English and Italian language too, if you would like! and if there's something you want brought from England maybe we can arrange something.
